What are first-time buyers entitled to?

First-time buyers in England are entitled to Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) relief on properties priced up to £500,000. They pay 0% Stamp Duty on the first £300,000 of the purchase price and 5% on the portion between £300,001 and £500,000. If the purchase price exceeds £500,000, first-time buyer relief does not apply and standard SDLT rates are charged on the full amount.

First-time buyers may also access mortgage products with deposits starting from 5%, subject to affordability and lender criteria. Shared Ownership schemes remain available in many areas, and the First Homes scheme offers discounted new-build properties in selected developments. Help to Buy equity loans are no longer available to new applicants.

Eligibility depends on individual circumstances, so checking qualification before making an offer is important.

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.
