How stamp duty works

Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) in England is charged in bands, so you pay different rates on different portions of the price. First-time buyers pay nothing on the first £300,000 (on purchases up to £500,000), and an additional property usually carries a surcharge.

This calculator covers England. Scotland and Wales have their own systems. Tax rules change, so always confirm the current position before you commit.
